Top Tips to Avoid Losing Your Keys

Top Tips to Avoid Losing Your Keys hero image

We’ve all been there. In fact, a recent study on a group of 3,000 individuals in the UK found that an average person loses up to 9 items every day. And keys were right at the top of the list for the most commonly misplaced item!

Despite how common it is, there’s nothing worse than walking up to your front door after a long day at work only to find that your keys aren’t where you left them and now here you are, locked out of your own home!

As experienced locksmiths in Wakefield, we help people who have lost their keys every day. We see firsthand the stress that it causes, so we’ve put together our top tips to avoid losing your keys and what you can do to keep your keys safe and secure.

1 – Keep Your Keys in the Same Place Everyday

One of the best ways to ensure you always know exactly where your keys are is to have a designated spot for them. Surprisingly, most people will lose their keys in their own homes. Walking in the door and chucking your keys on a table or the kitchen side leaves them at risk of being misplaced or moved.

Instead, you should choose a specific location where you place your keys every time you enter your home. This could be a hook on the wall, a dish on a table or a container on a shelf – whatever works for you. Try to get into the habit of using it every single time you come in and over time you won’t even have to think.

Just make sure that you don’t keep them close to a window or in sight of burglars!

2 – Use a Decorative Keyring or Keychain

Most people will usually have a couple of keys on a singular keyring, but unfortunately, due to their size, they can be easily misplaced. You might lose sight of them in a cluttered bag or drop them between the gaps in your sofa, for example. By attaching a large keychain or a bright-coloured accessory to your existing keyring, you can make your keys much easier to spot and therefore harder to lose. Opting for a lanyard is another great way to keep track of your keys – especially when you’re out and about.

3 – Spare Keys are Essential

If you lose your keys and you have no way of gaining access to your home, a spare set of keys can be a lifesaver! It could save a visit from your local locksmiths, meaning you also save time and money in this situation. Get your spare key cut at Wakefield Lock & Key Centre today in no time at all and reduce the worry of losing your keys with a handy backup!

We recommend giving it to a trusted family member who lives nearby or a friend in the area, even a neighbour if you’re close. You could also set up a lock box in a safe place outside your home in case of emergencies, but please don’t leave them under a doormat or plant pot!

4 – Make a Habit of Checking for Your Keys

If you’re infamous for leaving your keys behind wherever you go then it’s in your best interest to create a habit of checking your pockets or bag before you leave any location. This could be when leaving your house, leaving a friend’s home or any public place, just take a second to think and double check you have your keys on you and that you know where they are. Try to do this every time you leave a location for a month and it will soon become ingrained into your daily routine!

5 – Purchase a Tracker or Key Finder

If you’re someone who is constantly misplacing your keys (and other possessions) then it could be well worth your time and money to invest in a tracker. They’re pretty small and unobtrusive, and you’re able to pick them up for around £20-30 these days so they won’t break the bank!

All you need to do is attach them to your keys and it will then emit a signal that you can track using your phone. When you can’t find them, simply grab your phone and use an app to locate your missing keys within minutes.

6 – Stay Mindful of Your Keys in Public

This may be much easier said than done if you’re prone to losing your keys, but try to stay mindful of your keys at all times when in a public place. Keep them in a secure pocket or bag and refrain from leaving them on a table or surface.

Losing your keys can be a major headache, but there are steps you can take to prevent it from occurring. By following our advice you can keep them safe and secure at all times.
